Negotiation for freelancers

Simone and I visited the lecture about freelance work in London and different styles of negotiation. The lecture was a part of Enterprise Week.

So, there are different styles of negotiation:

  • Accommodating
  • Avoiding
  • Collaborating
  • Competing
  • Compromising

Arrange Fee

  • Be sure, that the fee is right
  • Be sure, that clients do not know how difficult/not difficult your work is

Mention all Details of work

  • How many pieces of work you need to do
  • How many hours your need to spend
  • When do you need to show your work
  • How do you need to show your work
  • How much freedom do you have while interpreting the brief
  • Mention means of communication with your client
  • How often do you need to communicate with your client
  • What to do if work is not satisfactory?

Be realistic

  • New freelances often underestimate how long a particular work might take
  • Make sure you are happy with the terms

1972 Olympic Games Pictograms

We’ve studied the language of Pictograms. 1972 Olympic games in Munich, Germany were mentioned for the use of international language of images. They introduced the sports pictograms, so anybody can understand them.

The language of pictograms is really easy to understand:

Monday’s creative review

This Monday we had a kind of creative review. We were required to show:

  • Our final manifesto
  • Our place ideas
  • Our best ad (from our previous works)
  • Ideas of launching ourselves

Everything was alright, but the waiting time. Tutors were circulating throughout the classes and giving their feedback. The thing is, that I get this kind of feedback every Friday on Friday’s creative review. I talk to tutors, get their opinions and points of view; I explain my ideas and try to prove my point of view.

So, my opinion about this Monday: it was unnecessary and it took too much time.

We had lots of spare time, but because this spare time had been split by presentations we were unable to concentrate and to produce our work.

Grant’s Mark Making

Form and color are attributes of every brand. People remember shapes and colors. If you own shape it is good, but if you own color – it is great!

For example, Cadbury owns purple color, Sainsbury’s owns shape, and so on.

Lecture finished one hour earlier, and it is not good…

Futures week

Futures week conference have been held here, in LCC. Many famous people. I’ve attended everything.

Computer networks, website development, Facebook, twitter, publishing, mobile app development, ebooks, holography, marketing – Cool!

Damien Poullain’s Ello

Ello, said Damien!.. He’d showcased us his portfolio, which is not bad. I remember one called Alpha Bêtes, which you need to smoke to produce:

Enjoyed his creative work. Finishing this post with full-of-truth words from his poster: “Be nice to nerds, chances are you’ll end up working for one”.
